The Importance of a Pest Control Professional
Your home is more than likely your largest investment, so protecting it from termites should be a prime concern. Don't risk your home's structural integrity with "do-it-yourself" termite control. Choose a licensed or certified pest control professional who's familiar with the most effective termite treatments available. Selecting such a company is just as important as selecting any other service professional you invite into your home, like a plumber, electrician or other maintenance provider.
Take your time to select a reputable pest management company and to decide on a course of treatment. There's no need to panic or to rush into a termite control program, even if you know that your house has a termite infestation. Delaying a few weeks will make little difference - termites work slowly and any further damage to your house will be minimal. Lastly, it's a good idea to obtain at least three estimates from different companies before signing a contract for services.
Understanding Termite Contracts
Once you engage a particular company, you may be asked to sign a work contract or service agreement.
It is important to understand clearly what obligations are assumed and what benefits are received in return. It is customary for a company to back its termite control work with a service agreement for a specified time. However, a service agreement is no better than the firm that presents it. Understand the service agreement offered and if it only vaguely refers to termite control, be suspicious. Determine if a yearly charge will be levied during the agreement. Ask what is needed to keep the service agreement in force, determine if the firm will notify you when inspections are due.
Many pest control professionals also offer a warranty or agreement on their work. There are typically two types: a retreat warranty/agreement, covering the cost to retreat your home should termites return; and a damage repair warranty/agreement, covering the cost to retreat, plus repair any damage caused by termites should they return. Understand the implications of both, and work with a pest control professional that offers the best arrangement for your comfort level.
